Betty Mascaro
April 3, 2021

Betty Mascaro, 90, Carbondale, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 3, at her daughter’s home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tony Mascaro, who died June 3, 2004.

Born and raised in Pleasant Mount, daughter of the late Bill and Elizabeth Bucklish Jones, she grew up on her family farm in Curtis Valley and graduated from Pleasant Mount High School as Salutatorian of her Class.

Betty worked in the garment industry for many years and retired from Gentex in 1996. In her younger days, Betty was avid bowler, winning many bowling trophies. She always bragged she won more trophies than Tony. In retirement, she and Tony enjoyed their yearly trips to Florida to see their children and grandchildren. She began making Christmas stockings, always making sure every new member of the family received one, which we still hang with pride. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She was an excellent baker. Some of her best recipes were handed down from her mother and grandmother.

Betty was very active in the First Presbyterian Church in Carbondale for many years. She loved her weekly sewing group. Betty loved playing canasta and was a member of her neighborhood card club for more than 50 years. The eight women in the card club never missed a monthly get together. Rose, Liz, Barbara, Kathryn, Sophie, Ruth, and Maureen were like her sisters. She also looked forward to her Saturday night canasta “shuffle” with her brother Hodge and his wife Theresa. (later Hodgie and Sue joined the game). Sunday afternoons always meant a trip back to the family farm to visit her Mom and a re-match with Hodge and Theresa.

Betty is survived by daughters Patty Steele and husband Ed (Dade City, FL), Pam Hudson and husband Ron (Carbondale), Joann Rubright and husband John (Lutz, FL) and son Tony (TJ) Mascaro and wife JoLynn (New Cumberland, PA); 9 grandchildren, Heather, Michelle, Justin, Mike, Chris, Ashley, Amber, Olivia and Jamie; 8 great-grandchildren; a sister Hazel Berish (Vestal NY); and several nephews and cousins.

Betty was preceded in death by a brother Hodge Jones, sister-in-law Theresa Jones and brother-in-law Andy Berish.

Betty’s family would especially like to thank Lynnae White for her compassionate and loving care. We could not have gotten through this without her. We would also like to thank the VNA Hospice for their wonderful service. A special thank you to her nurses Karen and Connie, who took exceptional care of Mom.

The funeral will Friday from the First Presbyterian Church, Carbondale at 11:00 AM. Friends may call Thursday from 4-6 PM at Lawrence A. Gabriel Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 74 N Main St, Carbondale. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

Online condolences may be sent to the funeral home website.
