Marlene Peterson, 80, of Scranton, passed away peacefully Thursday, Aug. 25, 2022, at Allied Services Hospice after a prolonged illness.

Born Aug. 16, 1942, in West Scranton, she is survived by her two daughters, Lisa Kavulich Algar and Lori Dructor and her two granddaughters, Stephanie and Melissa Algar, lovingly known to them as Grandma Horsey. She was the only child of the late Peter (Pietrewicz) Peterson and Anne (Durdan) Peterson of West Scranton. A graduate of West Scranton High School, she fulfilled a lifelong dream later in life by graduating from the University of Scranton Dexter Hanley College. A kind and loving soul, she worked to care for others, bringing her beautiful smile and gentle touch to their lives.

Before her illness, she was an avid reader, always seeking knowledge and meaning in our world. Her pierogies and spaghetti sauce will not be forgotten nor will her love for Ghigiarelli’s Pizza. She played the piano and shared with others this gift. A woman of beauty and style, she loved to travel. She was a singer and filled the world around her with music. From Broadway and the opera, to movies and restaurants, she always had plans on her schedule as she opened this world to her loving daughters and granddaughters. Her love of life was strong and always desired to live her life to the fullest. Her hopeful manners, the energy she brought to life and most of all, her loving care, will be missed greatly by all those who knew her. The family would like to express their sincere graditude to the care provided by the staff at the Jewish Home of Northeastern Pennsylvania and Allied Services Hospice.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday in Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, Scranton, at 10 a.m. The family will receive friends at the church from 9:15 a.m. until Mass time. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery.

Arrangements by Lawrence A. Gabriel Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 74 N. Main St., Carbondale, under the direction of Andrew A. Yurkanin Jr., Funeral Director. Online condolences may be sent to the funeral home website.
