Dorothy Mancuso

April 15, 2018

Dorothy Arcuri Mancuso, a lifelong resident of Carbondale, peacefully passed away at the age of 95 surrounded by her devoted family. She was the wife of the late Frank J. Mancuso, who died October 16, 1998. They would have been married 72 years.

Born on February 25, 1923 in Carbondale, Dorothy was the daughter of the late John and Caroline Tolerico Arcuri. She was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Carbondale. After graduating from Benjamin Franklin High School in Carbondale, Dorothy attended beauty school. She worked with her father and sisters as a hairdresser, and eventually opened her own beauty salon until she left the profession to devote her life to being a wife and mother. Throughout her life, Dorothy and her husband traveled extensively, almost always with their two grandchildren, and for over 30 years, Dorothy enjoyed gathering with close friends at her weekly Monday night card club. Still, she found immense pleasure in simple summer days sitting on the porch chatting with family and enjoying the warmth of the sun.

Dorothy saw each day as a gift. She faced every challenge with courage, strength, dignity, and a deep faith rooted in the power of the rosary. In her compassion for others, she shared that faith daily in saying rosaries for those in need. Dorothy’s genuine kindness was felt by all she encountered. She always wanted to take care of others before herself, but she was equally appreciative of every kind deed directed toward her.

Dorothy cherished her family. She shared a remarkable bond with her grandchildren and with her great- grandchildren, Christopher and Juliana. Nothing brought her more enjoyment than their visits. While generations apart, Dorothy was as youthful as her great-grandchildren at heart, and she adored every moment of play time they shared.

Dorothy lived a life surrounded and immersed in love. The warmth of her smile and her vibrance for life were felt instantly by all who met her. She had a way of finding peace in the most difficult situations, and she always encouraged that peace in others through her wisdom, a touch of humor, and most definitely a cup of hot tea. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her loving daughter, Diane Bonacci and husband, Fred, Carbondale, with whom she resided. She is also survived by her two grandchildren, Dr. Fred Bonacci and wife Susan, Eynon; and Marisa Durkin and husband Brian, Carbondale; two great-grandchildren, Christopher Bonacci and Juliana Bonacci, Eynon; a sister, Mary Ann Bonacci, Newington, CT; a sister-in- law, Fran Mancuso, Carbondale; a brother-in- law, Donald Mancuso and wife Susan, Crystal Lake; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Nancy Gillott; and three brothers-in- law, Fred J. Mancuso, P.E., Joseph Bonacci, and James Gillott.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Joan Cerra, CRNP and the Haley Family Practice, as well as the staff of the Hospice of the Sacred Heart, for their extraordinary kindness and compassionate care.

The funeral was held Wednesday, April 18, 2018, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 15 Fallbrook St., Carbondale, celebrated by Father Paul Fontanella. Interment, Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Finch Hill.

The family received friends at the church from 8:30 a.m. until mass time.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes to have donations made in Dorothy’s name to Hospice of the Sacred Heart, 100 William St., Dunmore, PA, 18510.

Arrangements by Lawrence A. Gabriel Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 2 Hospital St., Carbondale.
