Patrick “Carl” Purcell

Patrick “Carl” Purcell, 76, Carbondale, passed away peacefully surrounded by family, on September 1, 2024, at Commonwealth Regional Hospital, Scranton.

Born in Carbondale, son of the late Patrick and Maryjoan (Hessling) Purcell, he was a United States Army Sargeant, serving during the Vietnam Conflict.  During his time in the military, Carl received several service honors, including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, 3-time Purple Heart Recipient, as well as receiving an Air Medal.

Carl enjoyed the simple pleasures of life like hunting, fishing and long car rides in the country with his grandson, Ryan, and watching movies with his grandson, Stephen.  More recently he enjoyed sitting on the porch talking with his neighbors and offering a friendly hello to anyone passing by. Carl’s greatest possession was his family, including his adored children and grandchildren.

His survivors include, son, Stephen Purcell and his wife Bobbi Jo Cummings, Carbondale; daughter, Kristy Purcell, Carbondale; step-daughter, Stephanie Mullally, Carbondale; four grandchildren: Sierra Bradley and her significant other, Josh Dempsey; Ryan Mullally and his wife, Allison; Stephen Carl Purcell Jr.; and Brady Patrick Brown; a great-grandson, Ryan Mullally; a sister, Maryjoan McShaffery, Moscow; a brother, Michael Purcell and his wife Diana, Elkhart Indiana; and a sister-in-law, Dawn Purcell, Carbondale.

In addition to his parents, Carl was preceded in death by a brother, Jay Purcell.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family.
