Mary Joy (Cacossa) Oakley, 78, Scott Township, passed away Saturday, February 15, 2025, at Commonwealth Regional Hospital, Scranton. Her late husband, Wayne Oakley, died in 2001.
Born in Carbondale, daughter of the late Dominic and Josephine (Surace) Cacossa, she was a long-time parishioner and Eucharistic Minister at St. John Vianney’s Corpus Christi Church, Montdale.
A bank teller for over 40 years at the former Pioneer and Penn Star Banks, she was also a sales representative for Avon Products, as well as the former President/Treasurer of the Over 50 Club, Mayfield. Additionally, she worked as a receptionist at Sisters of IHM in Scranton. Mary Joy was a kind and caring person who enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She will be deeply missed.
Mary Joy’s survivors include, daughter, Noel Oakley, Scott Twp.; two sons, Michael Oakley, Davenport FL; Peter Oakley, Scott Twp.; son-in-law, Morris Capute, Carbondale; brother, Joseph Cacossa, Waymart; aunt, Mary Ann Surace, Childs; 6 grandchildren, Christopher Priest and wife Rachel, Kimberly Cohick and husband Matthew, Stephen Priest, Kaitlyn Priest, Brooke Priest, and Aaron Kondrat; 6 great-grandchildren, Caleb Priest, Genesis Cohick, Candace Cohick, Miles Priest, Spencer Cohick, and Remi Priest; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents (Dominic and Josephine) and husband (Wayne), she was preceded in death by her sister-in-law, Barbara Cacossa.
The funeral will be Thursday, February 20, 2025, from Lawrence A. Gabriel Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 2 Hospital St., Carbondale, with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am in St. John Vianney’s Corpus Christi Church, Montdale. Entombment, Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Finch Hill.
