Marie Margaret Fives, age 75, of Archbald, formerly of Carbondale, died unexpectedtly Friday evening, Sept. 28. She was the wife of Gerard Joseph Fives Sr.
Born Dec. 6, 1942, in Carbondale, Pa., Marie was the daughter of the late Alexander and Alice Burko Bianchi. She graduated from St. Rose High School in Carbondale and worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital in the accounting department. Later in her career, Marie became a co-proprietor of Singer Plumbing and Heating Supply in Carbondale for many years.
God came first in Marie’s life. As an active member of St. Rose Church in Carbondale, she devoted her time to various charitable activities and philanthropic efforts. She attended Eucharistic Adoration services and volunteered to serve Thursday meals to the needy. Marie cherished her children and grandchildren and was truly the matriarch of her family. Her grandsons kept her busy with their sporting events and extracurricular activities. Marie enjoyed gardening, reading spiritual books and spending time with loved ones.
She is survived by her son, Gerard Fives Jr. and his wife, Sophia, of Scott Twp., Pa.; daughter, Jill Fives Speer and husband, Kirk, of Tucson, Ariz.; daughter, Karen Palutis and husband, Joseph, of Blue Bell, Pa.; grandchildren, JJ Fives, James Fives, Lukas Fives, Joel Palutis and Josh Palutis; sisters, Elaine Mendicino and husband, Carmine, Mayfield; and Nancy Mroczka and husband, Richard, Carbondale; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, Oct. 2 at 11 a.m. in St. Rose Church, 6 N. Church St., Carbondale. Entombment, Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Finch Hill.
Friends may call Tuesday, Oct. 2, from 9 to 11 a.m. at St. Rose Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph’s Center, Scranton.
