Bruce Nelson Baron, 71, Carbondale, died Thursday at home. His wife was the late Joyce Baron.

Born in Pittsburgh, son of the late Anthony and Helen O’Connor Baron, Bruce was a PSA at Fairview State Hospital before retirement. Bruce was a 1964 graduate of Carbondale Benjamin Franklin High School and earned an associate degree from Lackawanna Jr. College.

He was a United States Navy veteran who served on the USS Fisk. He was a youth sports advocate serving as a member of the Pre-Teen Park Association for many years and held many offices. He was also commissioner of the Carbondale Little League. Bruce continued to attend games until the fall of 2017 and offered his opinion on various aspects of day-to-day operations whether sought after or not. For years, he was a head coach in the Carbondale Blitz junior football program.

He enjoyed trips to Atlantic City and Florida, was a charter member of Endless Mountain Ducks Unlimited and an avid Steelers and Pirates fan. His grandchildren were the light of his life, and he enjoyed every moment spent with them.

Surviving are three sons, Tim Baron and wife, Joy, Carbondale; Jeffrey Baron and wife, Mary Jane, New Jersey; Brian Baron and wife, Katie, Carbondale; eight grandchildren, Mason, Olivia, Gavin, Matthew, Emma, Amelia, Adam and Lydia; a sister, Debbie Minton and husband, Jerry, Carbondale; and several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Tony Baron; and sister, Birdie Baron.

A memorial prayer service by the Rev. Bill McGinty will be held on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. in Lawrence A. Gabriel Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 74 N. Main St., Carbondale. Interment at a later date.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m.
