It all began in the early 1950's when Mike and his sister Margie introduced themselves to me and my brother Les. I was the oldest at age 4 . There was rock throwing involved. And the Newcomb family became so much a part of the lives of the Essif family . Mrs. Newcomb was our unofficial second godmother and one of my mother's best friends. I am the eldest of five sons and had no big brother or sister to watch out for me. But on Franklin St. there was Mike and his brothers and sisters. When I became one of the "big kids" on the street , I modeled myself after Phil, Paul, Mary and Bobby to be there for the younger kids. Mike and I had our adventures "exploring " the vacant houses of the West side mine fire. We got into mischief together. But we also rescued animals trapped in the recently oiled dirt streets of Carbondale. And we were each other's conscience. Mike was a good friend who stood by me and gave me a dope slap when needed. Although we saw and spoke to each other infrequently as we got older, when I was going through a rough patch , Mike was there for me. I will miss him. My condolences and love to Karen and Mike's brothers and sisters. Jay
