Roberta Jeanne Lally
October 1, 2023

Roberta Jeanne Lally, 91, of Greenfield Twp., died peacefully at home on Sunday surrounded by her family.

Born in Mayfield, Pa., daughter of the late James F. and Lillian Mullen Lally, she was valedictorian of Scott High School class of 1950. She earned a BA in history and a BS in business administration at the University of Maryland in 1954. She received her master’s in counseling from Marywood University in 1972.

She taught in the Western Wayne School District before starting her work as a guidance counselor in 1967 in the Mountain View School District, Kingsley, Pa., where she spent the remainder of her career until her retirement in 1990. She always encouraged her students to further their education in college, university or to attend vocational trade schools — “to be all that they could be.” She touched the lives of many students, who kept in touch with her for years after their high school graduation.

Jeanne loved to travel, particularly to Ireland; to attend school functions; to spend time on their family farm and just enjoy nature. She spent more than 76 years in the same home. A former choir member in many local parishes, she loved her faith and to sing about it.

Surviving are nieces, Jeanne Opeil-Kernoschak, Kyla Lally, Joan Lally; nephew, Rev. Cyril P. Opeil, S.J.; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Lally, wife of her twin brother, Robert J. Lally.

She was preceded in death by her siblings, James F. Lally, Mary Latourette, Dorothy “Dottie” Lally, Robert J. Lally, John J. Lally and Ruth L. Opeil.

The funeral will be Friday from Corpus Christi Church, Montdale, Pa. (St. John Vianney Parish) with Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by her nephew, Rev. Cyril P. Opeil S.J., at 10 a.m. Interment, Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Finch Hill. A viewing will be held in Corpus Christi Church from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m., with Mass to follow.

Arrangements by Lawrence A. Gabriel Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 74 N. Main St., Carbondale. Online condolences may be sent to the funeral home website.
