John J. Lawler, 79, of Carbondale, passed away peacefully on Monday at home surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Joey (Levite) Lawler.
 
Born in Teaneck, New Jersey on Nov. 10, 1942, son of the late John and Mary Walsh Lawler, he was a graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School, class of 1960. He graduated from East Stroudsburg University with a degree in special education and speech pathology. John came from a family of educators and began his career as a speech pathologist for the Northeast Education Intermediate Unit (NEIU) where he worked for 40 years before retiring as director of human resources.
 
Also surviving are his sons, Attorney John J. Lawler Jr. and fiancée, Danielle; Patrick Lawler and wife, Teri; granddaughters, Olivia and Sofia Lawler; his brother, Marty Lawler and wife, Anne; his brother-in-law, Lou Levite and wife, Marcella. He is also survived by nephews, Martin Lawler and wife, Jonelle; Michael Lawler and Louis Levite; and a niece, Lisa Levite.
 
He was very active in the Democratic Party and served as president of the Lackawanna County Young Democrats. He was honored to serve, with his brother Marty, as the honorary grand marshall of the 2014 Scranton St. Patrick’s Day Parade. He was a member of Elkview Country Club for more than 40 years where he enjoyed golfing with his sons and friends. He was a member of St. Rose of Lima Parish, Carbondale; the executive committee of the Lackawanna County Friendly Sons of St. Patrick; and the Columbia Hose Company No. 5.  He enjoyed trips to Atlantic City, N.J. with his friends, Nick, Mike and Al, and trips to Ocean City, Maryland with his family. He also enjoyed watching Notre Dame, Penn State and N.Y. Giants football games. John was a quiet individual and a gentleman. His pride and joy were his two granddaughters, Olivia and Sofia. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who was always there to lend a helping hand.
 
The family would like to thank Mary and Kathy from Aveanna Health Care as well as the nurses from Hospice of the Sacred Heart for their loving and compassionate care.
 
The funeral will be Friday from Lawrence A. Gabriel Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 74 N. Main St., Carbondale, with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Rose of Lima Church. Interment, Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Greenfield Twp. The family will receive family and friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m.
